Bielsa's Carnival

  • Bielsa Carnival, Aragon

Date: During carnival time, for 3 days.

An anthropological phenomenon with great popular tradition and symbolism. Its origins are lost in time. The trangas are young men wearing coloured skirts and shirts, with their heads and shoulders covered by goats skins and with large horns, black faces and teeth made of potatoes, and with bells hanging from their belts. They hold the tranga, which they bang on the floor. The madamas are young single firls with skirts of coloured ribbons and they symbolise purity. Other people: The amontato, the caballet, the goluchos, the garretas and the Cornelio, a doll that symbolises the carnival and which is burnt on the last day.
